Year End Report for 2010-2011 School Year:
    Mission Statement
Holy Cross Catholic School exists to educate the whole child, spiritually and academically, preparing them to be responsible and respectful members of the global community with Jesus as our model.
    Curriculum and Professional Growth
Each year we review one curriculum area to evaluate our practices and our materials. This year we focused on science and purchased new materials for instruction. Teachers were excited to supplement their textbooks with many hands on activities and lab materials. These new materials help to make our program more interactive and engaging. Teachers received training and increased their use of the SMARTboards in an effort to present more engaging lessons to the students. The language arts program was enhanced through the use of “Words Their Way” spelling program by first through third grades. Students experienced great success. Participation in the incentive program “Reading Counts” rose threefold increasing student’s experience of reading for pleasure.
Teachers received training throughout the year and through many venues. The teaching staff shared a workshop with All Saints teachers entitled “Top Twenty Training”. They used this training to better manage classroom behavior and teach students to be successful learners and classmates. Members of our school staff took classes in these subject areas: Staff Development, Literacy and Learning, Guided Reading, Building Successful Readers, Inquiry Science Instruction, STEM, Interactive Whiteboards, Writers Workshop, and Response to Intervention.
    Academic Special Events
There are many reasons for us to be proud of our students’ achievements this year. The following is a sampling:
    • Of our 12 eighth grade graduates, 2 received Presidential Gold Honors (A Honor Roll for the year), and 7 received Presidential Silver Honors (B Honor Roll for the year).
    • Third through seventh graders completed the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress assessments in the fall and spring. All grades demonstrated marked improvement over the school year. End of year average scores show Holy Cross School students outperformed the national norm group in both reading and math.
    • Sixth grade math enrichment students participated in the nationwide Stock Market Game. Five teams of students competed. Our best team placed 90th out of 544 teams nationwide.
    • Second through sixth grade students participated in the Reading Counts incentive program. During the year, they read 2,125 books (up from 776 last year) and earned 9,051 points (up from 2,982 last year).
    • The Holy Cross School Band, in its third year of existence, performed at the Christmas concert and Eighth grade graduation.
    • Ten Holy Cross School students competed in the New Prague District Spelling Bee. Three students advanced to the regional competition where our top student placed 7th overall.
    • Thirty-eight Holy Cross School students sent artwork to the New Prague Area Art Show that was held in the New Prague Library.
    • The entire sixth grade class spent three days at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center studying the environment and learning about teamwork.
    • The sixth grade class completed the DARE curriculum presented by the Rice County Sheriff Department.
    Service Projects and Spirituality
Students in every grade participated in service projects. In addition to the usual projects (Pennies for Patients, Advent Sharing Drive, Feed My Starving Children and Clean the Highway) students also visited Senior Centers and made Valentines for hospitalized children. This year the Marathon for Non Public Education became a Service Marathon. Students donated their time and talent to Salvation Army, ARC in Richfield, Villages in Lonsdale and Mala Strana. Other students spent a day raking yards for the elderly. The youngest students made greeting cards.
In the tradition of our Catholic faith, students and staff regularly celebrate the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation. Other expressions of our spirituality include intercessory prayer, weekly prayers of Stations of the Cross and The Rosary during Lent, Advent candle lighting and the Eighth Grade Retreat. This year we started observing Eucharistic Adoration on the first Friday of each month. It has been a blessing to the students, staff and parishioners who support our efforts. We enjoyed many visits to our classrooms from the parish priests. This year we included visits from the parish deacon and Archbishop Harry Flynn. We also hosted a visit from four Franciscans who were conducting a Mission Event at St. Nicholas Church.
    Technology
We are committed to providing the best access to technology possible while being good stewards of our resources. We were able to purchase refurbished computers for the whole school. In addition, we updated our website, student information system and email accounts. The School Advisory Board rewrote our Electronic Media Policy to bring it up to date. The new policy addresses the use of social media and cyberbullying.
    Athletics
Our athletic teams continued to be a popular activity for the middle school students; 97% of the students participated in volleyball, basketball, softball or baseball. All our teams had successful seasons and the capstone for the program was the Athletic Banquet in May. Athletes were recognized for their accomplishment, and the eighth graders were presented with trophies for their years of participation.
Athletics at Holy Cross School is supported by the Athletic Association. This year, in addition to the Sunday breakfast fundraisers, they increased their commitment to providing concessions. Concessions were available at most home games. A highlight activity for the Athletic Association was the Summer Kick Off. The Athletic Association also demonstrates outstanding support for the building and maintenance of the ball-fields and storage shed.
    School Boards
Holy Cross School is fortunate to have many volunteers. Our two school boards, the Board of Directors and the School Advisory, consist of 6 members each, 2 per parish. This year, in addition to their regular responsibilities, the boards renewed the Cost of Education Partnership which seeks to educate families about the real costs of education and invites their participation as a tax deductable contribution. The program was very successful.
    CPO (Crusader Parent Organization)
During the 2010-2011 school year, the CPO coordinated many events and assisted with numerous programs. This year the CPO hosted social events to bring families together. They included: Spaghetti Dinner, Pizza and Bingo nights, and a Harvest Dance. In addition, the CPO is a key organization to the success of the Marathon, Catholic Schools Week and Grandparents Day. Throughout the year, the CPO provided treats for the staff as a show of appreciation for the care given to our students.
    Fundraising
The Marathon continues to be our most profitable fundraising event, followed by the Silent Auction, Crusader Club Raffle/Dinner, Golf Outing and Fish Fry. A new event this year was the Catholic United Financial Catholic Schools Raffle. The income generated from fundraising goes toward our general operating expenses. This year our fundraising efforts brought in $96,000. In addition to the strong support we continue to receive from the Knights of Columbus and FCSLA, we also enjoy ongoing support from 45 other area businesses and organizations. Thank you to all our generous families and community supporters.
    Conclusion
Holy Cross Catholic School is a vibrant and nurturing environment for students and their families. We continue to grow as a community and share our Catholic faith. The staff is grateful for the tremendous cooperation of the families, the parishes and the local businesses. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Sponsored by Best Prep, a non-profit organization that helps students prepare in areas such as business and finance, The Stock Market Game was played by 236 teams throughout the State in this category. Each team started with $100,000 worth of play money and invested it over a 3 month period. Team Vikla and Hager grew their portfolio to $110,112.03. Holy Cross Catholic School Receives a Grant!

Holy Cross Catholic School received a $10,000 grant from the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) to purchase ceiling projectors and mounts for six classrooms. The needed equipment will allow teachers and students to have more productive use of the school’s Smart Boards.

The FCSLA is a 120 year old Fraternal Benefit Society that sells life insurance and annuity products to all Catholics of Slovakian lineage. At its 40th National Convention, which was held in Baltimore, Maryland in October, the FCSLA awarded over $880,000 in grant money. The awards were given in keeping with the vision of the organization which is to promote the communities where FCSLA branches are located. 140 churches, educational institutions, religious orders and ministries, libraries, museums, and facilities for the aged applied for the FCSLA grant.

We are so appreciative of the FCSLA for this grant and the local FCSLA Branch W056 in Lonsdale for their continued support. A special thank you to local branch President Milt Trnka for his hard work in helping us obtain this grant!
